Chitose, located in the inland area of central Hokkaido, plays an important role as a base for air, sea and land transportation linking people and goods. New Chitose Airport has established direct air routes to major domestic airports; for example, a 90-minute flight brings you to Tokyo and 110 minutes to Osaka and 135 minutes to Fukuoka. New Chitose is also an international airport. Nine regular international passenger air routes are available, connecting Hokkaido to Guam, Honolulu, Shanghai and other cities. It is becoming increasingly important as a key site linking Hokkaido to the world. Chitose is a transportation base connected to Sapporo, Hokkaido's political and economic center, and the Asahikawa area by highway, and to southern and eastern Hokkaido by JR. It is also adjacent to Tomakomai Port, which offers ferry service and international container service.
